Perhaps more than any other, St. Benedict of Nursia contributed to the saving of the Christian culture of the West. At a time when Roman order had collapsed and barbarian invaders were picking through the rubble of the once great civilization of the Roman Empire, Benedict founded the religious community that would, in time, preserve the best of the old and allow for the emergence of a particularly Christian way of life.
Much like the present times, when the culture today appears to be making rubble out of so much of what was so dear to our recent ancestors. Perhaps we need a new “Benedict” to help us “preserve the best of the old and allow for the emergence of a particularly Christian way of life.”
